The NATO strap's origins date back over 50 years to a simple grey strap. Over time, it expanded to include colors such as RAF Blue, Black, Navy Blue, the iconic James Bond pattern, and Olive Green. Today, the range has evolved to offer a vast selection of variants, including regimental colors, Search and Rescue (SAR) orange, national colors, police unit designs, and specialized camouflage patterns. The original NATO strap specification was issued by the UK Ministry of Defence under Defence Standard 66-47 Issue 2, published on March 30, 2001. Previous specifications include Def Stan 66-47 Issue 1 (1992) and Def Stan 66-15 from the 1970s. While there have been minor updates, the design remains largely unchanged, with most bulk contracts now requiring stitched buckles for added durability.
